The Future of Nordic Manufacturing

Nordic manufacturing companies are critical to the economic health of our countries. They are very reliant on public business consultants to help them with automation and digitisation as they can help kick-start their journey towards a better use of new technology. Due to the volume of information and the rate of technological change, it’s increasingly difficult for public business consultants to stay current on the latest technologies, processes,innovations as well as methods to help companies.

Brief

We are looking for new ideas and proven solutions from the public and private sectors that can enhance the knowledge and skills of our public business consultants across the region, and also enable the sharing of best practices and methods of helping companies, so they can better advise manufacturing companies on how to meet the challenges of the future.

A good solution can take many forms. It could include digital elements like new technologies/apps/expert communities, offline solutions like forums and training strategies, or a combination of these elements. If you for example have a solution that has worked in another industry or one you’ve been a part of, we’re very interested in knowing more about it.

It is important that you explain how your solution adds knowledge, skills or methods to business consultants, and how best practice methods might be shared between the consultants, so that they are better equipped to help manufacturing companies. Your focus could be on these subjects, though not limited to:

  • How to identify and motivate relevant manufacturing companies to initiate (new) projects on automation and digitalization.
  • How to identify areas (processes and functions) within the company where implementation of automation and digitalisation is relevant and has the greatest potential
  • How to finance the project. E.g. how to establish a solid business case or diffuse knowledge on different lending models (e.g. shared risk models)
  • How to point the companies towards relevant technical advisors who can help them implement the needed equipment.

We’ve invited contributions to this challenge from private companies and consultancies, technology companies and start-ups, university students and the general public. We believe it’s important to get perspectives from around the business ecosystem so we can find the best possible solution. We’re looking for you to draw from your personal experiences in crafting your solution.

Establishing “The Nordic SME Growth Movement”

INTRODUCTION
Through a stepwise (2017-2020) establishing of an extended user friendly E-learning universe targeted solely at the Nordic SME-segment we will through public-private co-operation form “The Nordic Growth Movement”.

"Idea in Brief:

Problem: There is an enormous profit potential for manufacturing firms in big data, but one of the key barriers to obtaining data-driven growth is the lack of knowledge about which capabilities are needed to extract value and profit from data.

Solution: We (BDBB research group at CBS) have developed a research-based capability mapping tool, entitled DataProfit, which the public business consultants can use to upgrade their tool kit to enable data-driven growth in manufacturing organizations.

"The potential for the Nordic manufacturing sector is huge, and more than 50% of our exports stem from the manufacturing sector [1]. However, automation is expensive to implement and it requires specialist skills to maintain, while 90% of all manufacturing companies in Nordic countries employ fewer than 20 employees [1]. Automation lends itself better to high-volume production, of which we have very little left in the region.
