Solution Concept

The backbone of each feature we are going to have is a network of sensors in bins around the area, which monitor and collect data about how full each bin is. To achieve a cleaner environment, we aim to eliminate the littering caused by overflowing bins. First of all, we can mine the collected data and automatically create optimized waste transport schedules and routes to keep the bins empty and prevent overflowing possibly all the time. To further fight this problem, an openly available app can be released, which informs users about potentially full (if there are any) bins and navigates them to the nearest usable one. And our last line of defense is a physical indicator on bins, encouraging people (who don’t use the app) not to throw trash out when the bin could overflow. This would be a LED light that according to the fullness of the bin would start at green (being empty) and slowly change its shade to the color red (indicating the bin is full). Even if this would not prevent citizens from throwing their trash into the bin while it is full,  it would surely prevent a certain amount of people from doing so and therefore, look for another bin that can be used.
