Combating Marine Debris as part of Ocean Conservation Agenda and Creating Huge Positive Impact Everyday

This idea is a part of 360 Challenge 2019

June 26, 2019

At DESMI EnviRo-Clean, we combat ocean plastic pollution by stopping the marine pollution as close to the source of the pollution as possible and aiming to recover affordable energy or any other form of resource out of the collected waste.

The business idea  of combating ocean bound pollution at DESMI EnviRo-Clean is under the pilot stage in various countries.

The Positive SDG impact is calculated on regular basis. From February and until now, 65 tons of marine debris have been stopped from leaking in to our oceans. Thus creating positive impact on UN SDG #6, #11, #13, #14 and #17.

The idea is to prove how the global critical challenges can be remedied by a commercial companies by basing their business on UN Sustainable Development Goals.

As the researchers say, each year approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste leaks into the oceans making it the most widespread pollution problems. This has led to a global call for prevention actions due to the negative influence on marine life, fishery resources, livelihood of coastal areas, basic nature values, tourism, environmental impact inlands and the long-term threat against human health.

Meanwhile driven by UN SDG’s and the growing attention from consumers, NGO’s, governments and the industry, global focus is changing from merely collecting debris to processing and re-use or harvesting of potential in floating debris. Driven by recent reports, attention has also shifted to the fact that 80 pct. of plastic that ends up in the ocean has started its journey in one of 20 rivers in the world. In other words, in environments where it can be captured at less cost and higher residual value than years later somewhere in the ocean.

At DESMI, we have more than 40 years of experience in safeguarding marine environment from oil spills.  Based on our experience, we aim for marine debris collection projects. However, it does not differentiate us from the other suppliers worldwide, who collect & dump the waste on the nearest (legal or illegal) disposal sites. With time, this waste is leaked into the waters again and consequently, the collection begins. These kind of processes may attain short-term gains however conflicting company’s long-term reputation.

In the process to combat ocean bound plastic pollution close to the source, there are various phases involved until the waste is managed properly. These phases are traditionally defined in the following order; collection, recovery, transporting, sorting & disposing.

On the other hand, at DESMI EnviRo-Clean, we aim to redefine this traditional waste management model to sustainable waste management model which will have high positive environmental impact. The model is developed to be in the subsequent order, collection, recovery, sorting, (transporting) & processing.

This model defined with sustainable waste management aspect creates huge positive environmental impact.

Targeting to offer added value to our customer by offering complete waste management solution for ocean bound plastics, we aim to deliver ease of mind, environmental solutions and social & economic benefits.

Recently we have established a partnership with Indian national government to operate in in-land Indian waters to ensure reduced leakage into large Indian rivers like The Ganges & Yamuna River.
